Your Guide to SEO-Friendly Website Copy

When it comes to creating your website copy, you want to find that sweet spot between sounding like you and making sure Google knows what you’re all about.

The key is to seamlessly incorporate your SEO keywords without turning your content into a keyword-stuffed mess.

Don’t worry – it’s easier than it sounds!

1. Start with your Audience, not Google

Yes, SEO is important, but your copy should always speak to the humans who are reading it.

Before you dive into using your keywords, think about what your audience is looking for and how your business solves their problem.

Write in a way that feels natural, conversational, and engaging. Google loves it when people find your site useful and stick around, so focus on your readers first!

2. Naturally Incorporate your Keywords

Okay, you’ve got your list of keywords – now what? The trick is to weave them into your copy in a way that feels organic.

Use them where they make sense, like in your headlines, subheadings, and the body of your text.

But don’t overdo it. You want your keywords to fit like a puzzle piece, not stick out like a sore thumb.

For example, instead of saying:

We are the best Denver wedding photographers, so if you need an experienced marriage or elopement photographer in Denver, our professional photographers are ready to help!

Try something more natural, like:

As wedding photographers based in Denver, we love capturing those special moments with couples who are just as in love with the mountains as we are.

Notice how it flows? That’s what you want!

3. Write for Skimmers

You’re probably not shocked to hear that most people don’t read every word on a page. In fact, they usually skim to find the part that’s most relevant to them.

That’s why it’s super important to break up your copy with:

Subheadings

  • Bullet points
  • Like this
  • And this…

…and short paragraphs that readers can easily scan.

Fun Fact: If you’re working with us on a website restyle, or using one of our website templates, we’ve already done half the work for you! We strategically incorporate headings, subheadings, and short paragraphs into our websites and templates. Use these as a guide for content length and structure as you write your website copy and you’ll be on your way to a higher ranking site!

And keep in mind, subheadings aren’t just for humans — they also signal to search engines what your page is about. So, by including your keywords in your subheadings (where it feels natural), you help both your readers and Google at the same time.

For example…

Let’s say you run a yoga studio and want to rank for “beginner yoga classes.” Instead of burying that phrase deep in your text, you can use a subheading like:

Beginner Yoga Classes Designed to Fit Your Schedule

Plus, if someone only has a minute to look over your page, subheadings ensure they get the gist quickly, making it more likely they’ll stay on your site longer – which, by the way, Google loves.

4. Keep it Simple & Focus on Value

When writing website copy, it’s easy to feel like you need to include every single detail about your business – but that’s not necessary (and it’s probably overwhelming for your readers).

Instead, focus on writing clear, concise sentences that pack a punch.

Google loves valuable content that answers people’s questions and solves their problems, so every sentence should count. Avoid long, complicated sentences and unnecessary fluff.

For example, if you’re a salon owner, rather than saying:

Our salon offers a wide variety of services, including haircuts, color treatments, balayage, highlights, hair extensions, and more, catering to men, women, and children, with expert stylists ready to handle all your needs, from basic trims to complete hair transformations, using the latest trends and techniques.

Try simplifying it to something like:

Whether you’re looking for a fresh cut, vibrant color, or extensions, our expert stylists are here to give you the look you’ll love.

We specialize in balayage, highlights, and everything in between, using the latest techniques to make sure you leave feeling fabulous.

A great way to do this is by imagining you’re having a conversation with a potential client.

Would you overwhelm them with paragraphs of information all at once? Probably not. You’d keep things simple and clear while giving them exactly what they need.

Your copy should do the same.

5. Call to Action with Purpose

Don’t leave your visitors hanging! Once they’ve read your awesome, SEO-friendly copy, make sure to guide them to the next step.

Whether it’s contacting you, booking a service, or signing up for your newsletter, your call to action should feel like a natural next move.

For example, if you’re a photographer:
