Hey guys, Jess here 👋🏼
So, the other day, my brother was telling me about a work problem.
I won’t go into detail (because what’s LESS fun than hearing about the professional woes of someone you don’t know…) but it was about email marketing.
Luckily for him, I’ve spent a ton of time learning & testing and am pretty much a legit email expert.
So, I had a super helpful knowledge-bomb to drop on him 💣
I explained our email strategy to him & told him how effective it’s been.
A lightbulb went off for him 💡
YES! THAT’S WHAT I SHOULD BE DOING!
He should’ve stopped there.
Sweet baby angel, so innocent and unaware.
He proceeded to say:
I’ll send you a talk by this guy who teaches how to do that! He came to speak at a corporate event I was at, and his whole talk was about it!
Wow, that would be SO helpful.
I’d love my own expertise mansplained back to me!
(This is not a story about emotional intelligence.)
This is a story about how some guy shows up on a stage in a suit to tell you the same thing I just did, and subconsciously, you perceive him as more qualified.
Because someone paid him $5,000 to dress up and make a PowerPoint presentation.
Why am I telling YOU all this?
Because this is a thing.
A mental barrier.
For all of us—but especially for women.
There is most definitely expertise that YOU have—something you could be up on a stage teaching people about—but since you’re instead sitting on your couch in your yoga pants (maybe even yelling at your kids to stop fighting—or for the last time NO you cannot have another snack!) it feels like you’re less qualified 😭
Well, friend, I’m here to tell you (and myself, and my brother, and everyone else): that’s some major B.S.
I’m also here to say:
Thanks, Internet, for giving ALL of us a platform to reach other people who need to hear from us.
There are so many people—people who are not middle-aged white men in Corporate America, but instead dreamers at their desk jobs, hustlers at their restaurant gigs, or warriors making Kraft mac & cheese for the nine-thousandth day in a row b/c it’s all their kid will eat—who not only need to hear what you have to say, but they need to hear it the way ONLY YOU can say it.
Not only can you reach them, but you can actually do it BETTER. Because you’re not using terms like “organizational efficiency” and “synergy” and “let’s think outside the box.” 🙄
You can break it down in a way that makes sense for other people like you.
Take a minute and think about what you have knowledge & expertise in, and how you can share that with other people.
And know that you are qualified… MORE qualified, even, than it feels sometimes.
And figure out how to share that shit with the world 🙌
Because someone (actually, lots of someones) NEED it.
Don’t let your own fear or ego get in the way of sharing what you have and helping someone who needs it.
xo,
Jess
